A Thanksgiving Art Project for the Whole Family PDF Print E-mail
By Elizabeth McPherson

Every year, we weather traffic delays, the high prices of gasoline, and jet lag with one thing in mind: Thanksgiving with the family.  Ranking highest among the festivities are the delicious food and special traditions relived year after year.  Childhood memories are rekindled and the turkey isn’t the only thing stuffed on the holiday.  Oftentimes, we forget the reasons behind the celebration.  We forget the reasons for which even the State closes for recognition.  Thanksgiving is more than cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes; it’s the time for remembering our innumerable blessings and honoring God for His goodness.

Some family traditions do still include taking the time for each person to share a blessing for which they are thankful.  Others offer prayers of thanksgiving.  But once the turkey is gone and the football game is in full swing, we often forget all over again the reasons we are together…only to be remembered briefly the following Fall.

The idea of recognizing only one or two of God’s blessings, or forgetting them once we say them, doesn’t sit well with me.  So this year, my family is going to do something a little different.  It’s not something reserved solely for the young or old but fun for the whole family!  And, it can be reused and updated every year.  Thus, the Thanksgiving Table Cloth is born.

The first thing to do is purchase a nice linen table cloth in a light, solid color, such as light orange or taupe.  Have craft paints and brushes available for the little ones and colored Sharpies for the older ones. Make sure to place a plastic liner under the cloth and set the table with the linen tablecloth and a holiday appropriate arrangement.

The goal is to have each person scatter their ‘thanks’ all over the cloth; the more random, the better.  Children can paint the things they are thankful for, and even the grown-ups too!  For the more reserved, they can simply write the many blessings they have and sign their names.  Not only are we forced to think about our multiple blessings, but we are able to remember them year after year as we add to them.

Perhaps this year, try doing something creative and new like a Thanksgiving Table Cloth.  Doing things as a family creates memories.  And, doing crafts and fun projects as a family only makes those memories even more special.
