Grant A Wish PDF Print E-mail
By Elizabeth McPherson

I was watching TV the other night and was actually inspired by a commercial I saw.  Typically, they annoy me more than they get me thinking, but this one carried a slogan that still sticks with me.  If memory serves me correctly, which sadly isn’t a strength of mine, it was a Sears commercial.  The slogan? Something to the effect of, “Don’t give a gift this Christmas, grant a wish.”

As soon as the commercial ended on that note, I thought to myself, “Man, if people really thought like that, we’d all be a lot happier.”  During the holidays especially, we’re so focused on buying presents for the sake of tradition, we forget the meaning behind it.  If we are giving to reflect the greatest gift ever given, Jesus our Messiah, why aren’t ours more than just ‘gifts'?

What does this have to do with Art?  So many of us have dreams and wishes in life, and instead of pursuing them, we are trapped in the rat race of life.  Most people don’t have the resources or time to pursue what really interests them and what really brings them joy.  This includes all the ‘closet’ artists in the world, who are too busy playing the game of life that their talents are neglected.  If we all explored each other’s hearts more, maybe our gifts wouldn’t be so empty, and we could really begin to focus on truly granting wishes.

For the business dad who’s always dreamed of tinkering in the garage building train sets, or the stay-at-home mom who dreams of a quiet get-a-way to express her artistic talents; we each have dreams that we secretly hope would come true.  Granting these wishes takes creativity and thinking outside the box, but imagine the benefits reaped in our relationships if we not only supported each other’s dreams, but actually helped make advancements toward pursuing them!

Maybe this Christmas we should try to discover each other’s dreams, and help make them come true.  It’s about more than empty gifts; it’s a reflection of the attitude God has towards His people.  When we are focused on granting each other’s wishes, the generous and humble attitude of Christ is most powerfully displayed.
