The Whisper That Rescues PDF Print E-mail
By Lisa Buffaloe

Lightning flashes and thunder rumbles. Tail down and wide-eyed, our little dog runs to my chair. He looks at me with puppy dog eyes as if to question why I don’t fix things and why I don’t stop the storms. Whispering words of comfort, I scoop him into my arms, and cradle his shaking body.

I hate that he’s afraid. I watch the weather radar, so I know when to be concerned. All he knows are the sounds that send fear trembling through his body. If only he could understand my words, he’d know he was safe.

Holding him close, I wonder how many times I’ve run to God, wanting Him to dispel scary things and make life all better. I’ve often cried to Him when evil touched my life, or worries regarding health, job, children, family, and friends became overwhelming.

I try to show my dog how much I love him, and will keep him safe. God knows we also need repeated encouragement, hope, and assurance of safety. God is ever-present. Although situations may cause concern, His voice speaks through His Word with encouragement, hope, and safety.

“Say to those with fearful hearts, ‘Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.” (Isaiah 35:4 NIV).

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10 NIV).

“For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.” (Isaiah 41:13 NIV).

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV).

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9 NIV).

Storms will blow, but God's rescue is found in the whisper of His words. He is always near.
